Il se fait embaucher comme composeur au Chicago Tribune avant d’être renvoyé pour ses propos anti-capitalistes. Il travaille ensuite comme imprimeur, essentiellement pour les causes radicale et ouvrière. Il était membre de l’organisation modérée Knights of Labor (devenue en 1886 American Federation of Labor - AFL) et a été membre-fondateur du syndicat Central Labor Union. Parsons pouvait compter sur August Spies comme un allié proche, et a édité, le journal The Alarm, la version anglaise du Arbeiter Zeitung. Spies lui a demandé à la dernière minute de parler au rassemblement ouvrier anarchiste de Haymarket Square, lors de la grève pour la campagne des huit heures de travail quotidiennes commencée le 1 mai, et suivie par 340 000 travailleurs. Parsons s’est adressé à la foule pendant près d’une heure et a quitté les lieux avant que la bombe n’explose. Il prit la fuite de Chicago après les premières arrestations consécutives à l’attentat, mais y retourna de son plein gré. Il a été pendu en 1887, ayant pour ultime parole : "Laissez entendre la voix du peuple !". Ce jour, le 11 novembre 1887, a été appelé le "Black Friday" (Vendredi noir).
