Born in Marsala, Sicily, Anselmi became involved with the local Mafia at an early age. In 1924, Anselmi fled Sicily to avoid murder charges. Entering the U.S. illegally on the Gulf Coast, Anselmi eventually moved to Chicago, Illinois. Anselmi soon began working for the Genna brothers, one of Chicago's top bootlegging gangs. Anselmi soon met John Scalise, another hitman who would partner with Anselmi on many famous murders. They worked with Joseph Guinta, aka Hop Toad, although there were those who insisted that Giunta received most of his marching orders from John Scalise. The two became known as the "Murder Twins" because of the way they always worked together. They were known for rubbing their bullets in garlic before loading their weapons in the belief that it hasten death if the shots did not kill them instantly. On November 10, 1924, along with Scalise and Frankie Yale, they entered Dion O'Banion's flower shop for the purpose of picking up an order of flowers for the funeral of Mike Merlo, head of the Sicilian Union. O'Banion, head of the North Side gang, reached to shake Yale's hand who gripped it one hand and held his arm with the other. This had the effect of preventing O'Banion from reaching for his guns while Scalise and Anselmi pumped bullets into him, killing him instantly. On June 13, 1925, Anselmi and Scalise killed two Chicago policemen and wounded one other during a gun battle. Anselmi and Scalise were tried for the murder of one officer, Charles Walsh. Both men were convicted of manslaughter and sentenced to 14 years in prison. Four months later, they were acquitted of the murder of the second officer, Harold Olsen. Nine months later, Anselmi and Scalise were granted a retrial for the Walsh murder. They were acquitted. A second trial in 1927 also led to an acquittal. After the St. Valentine's Day Massacre on February 14, 1929, Anselmi's longtime friend and partner Scalise was indicted on charges relating to the massacre, as they had now been working for Outfit boss Al Capone. However, a short time later on May 8, 1929, Anselmi, Scalise, and Joseph Giunta were found dead on a road near Hammond, Indiana. It is now suspected that they were murdered by Capone when he heard that they were planning to betray him. All three were bludgeoned severely and shot. At first it was believed they were lured to a Union meeting and banquet were a fight broke out to lure them into complacency and then ambushed and beaten to death and shot. A more popular story which has been seen in every TV show, movie, and documentary on Capone emerged that Capone was toasting the three and even showed them a new baseball bat. He was boasting of all the damage that could be done with it and before the trio saw it coming, Capone's demeanor changed from charming to ultimate rage. He promptly beat all three to within an inch of their lives and then had his henchmen finish them off with gunshots in a "coup de grace".
