Al-Jaghbub is a remote desert oasis in the eastern Libyan Desert. It is actually closer to the Egyptian town of Siwa than to any Libyan town of note. The oasis is located in Al Butnan District and is the administrative seat of the Al Jaghbub Basic People's Congress. Supported by reservoirs of underground water and date production, the town is best known for its hard-won self sufficiency.

  • Al-Djaghbub és un oasi del sud-est de la Cirenaica, a Líbia, famós per ser ell loc on hi la tomba de Sayyid Muhammad ibn Ali al-Senussi, fundador de la secta senussita, origen de la casa reial de Líbia. L'oasi es troba a la via entre Siwa i Fezzan. La vall de Djabhbud ocupa tota la zona, uns 700 km2, regada pel uadi Djaghbub. Muhammad va venir del Caire i hi va fundar la seva zawiya el 1856. Va arribar a tenir fins a 3000 habitants pero dos terços eren esclaus. El fundador va morir el 1859 i el va succeir el seu fill sayyid Muhammad al-Mahdi ibn Sayyid Muhammad al-Senussi (1859-1902) que va abandonar el lloc i es va establir a Kufra i l'oasi va entrar en decadència. Fou ocupat pels italians el 1926 i pels britànics a la II Guerra Mundial quedant integrat a Líbia el 1951.
