The Euphrates divides Al-Bukamal into two areas: Shamiyya (belonging to the Levant) and Jazira Al-Jazira, a plains region consisting of northeastern Syria and northwestern Iraq, quite distinct from the Syrian Desert and lower-lying central Mesopotamia.
