Al-Ahly Benghazi was made a professional football club in 1947 although they had existed years before then. Al Ahly is the most supported club in Benghazi and is famous in Libya for its passionate, loyal and sometimes wildly violent crowds, who stood by the club through frustrating times (e. g stadium being demolished by the government without warning in 1999, destroying many old and traditional artifacts of the club. This has since been resolved and the club have been given 77 acres of land). The local derby between Al Ahly and Al Nasr guarantees a very intense atmosphere and one or two riots if not more. There are many clubs in Benghazi but this is the biggest derby in Benghazi as Al Ahly and Al Nasser are the two clubs with the most fans. This derby is,along with Tripoli's derby, the most prevalent in Libya.
