Beginning in the mid-18th century as one of the smallest Mohawk communities on the St. Lawrence River, today Akwesasne has 12,000 residents, resulting in the largest population and land area of any Kanien'kehá:ka community. It is one of several Kanien'kehá:ka territories within present-day Canadas: Kahnawake, Kanesatake, and the Six Nations of the Grand River First Nation. The name Akwesasne in Kanien'kehá (Mohawk language) means "Land Where the Ruffed Grouse Drums", referring to the rich wildlife in the area when founded. The Ruffed grouse was called a partridge by the early Europeans and as such some Mohawks use this European name. Beginning in the 18th century, Akwesasne was one of the Seven Nations of Canada.
