The name comes from the settlers from Brittany in the 16th century. The parish of Bretanha on July 10, 2002 was divided into this parish and Pilar da Bretanha. The main industry is agriculture and fishing. The parish is the northernmost in the Ponta Delgada and the island of São Miguel.
