The band was formed in 1967 with Michael "Fame" Günther (bass), Lutz "Lüül" Ulbrich (guitar), Lutz Ludwig Kramer (guitar) and Christopher Franke (drums). They were initially called Agitation, a name they chose at random from a dictionary. The name later changed to Agitation Free as a reflection of their live performance style.

They released their debut album, Malesch in 1972 on the Music Factory label. The album was inspired by their tour through Egypt, Greece, and Cyprus, sponsored by the German Goethe Institute. Later that year, they performed at the 1972 Munich Olympics. A second album was released in 1973, but the band disbanded in 1974. Agitation Free reunited in 1998 and released River Of Return in 1999. The band is included on the Nurse With Wound list.

À son retour d’un voyage d’échanges culturels avec l’Égypte, le Liban, Chypre et la Grèce, Agitation Free enregistre son premier album «Malesch», un mélange d’improvisation, de musiques traditionnelles et de rock psychédélique qui constitue l’un des meilleurs albums de space rock allemand des années 70. En 1973, le guitariste Gustav Lütjens intègre Agitation Free qui enregistre son deuxième album, tout simplement intitulé « Second ». Suivent deux années de tournée en France et en Allemagne. De cette période, plusieurs disques « live » témoigneront dont : « Last » et « At the cliffs of River Rhine ». Mais cette interminable tournée mène le groupe à l’épuisement et provoque certains différends quant à la direction musicale à prendre. Michael Hoenig, qui a reçu une proposition de Klaus Schulze de Tangerine Dream, quitte en 1974 le groupe, suivit de Burghard Rausch et Lutz Ulbrich… La même année la décision de mettre fin à Agitation Free est prise. Le groupe figure sur la Nurse with Wound list.

Nadat in 1970 gitarist Axel Genrich en in 1971 drummer Christopher Franke de band verlieten, rekruteerde de groep Jörg "Joshi" Schwenke als gitarist, Burghard Rausch als drummer en Michael Hoenig als keyboardspeler. Het debuutalbum Malesch verscheen in 1972 op het platenlabel Music Factory. Inspiratie voor het album had de groep gehaald uit een tour door Egypte, Griekenland en Cyprus, gesponsord door het Goethe-Instituut.
