- Aesop's Fables or the Aesopica are a collection of fables credited to Aesop, a slave and story-teller supposed to have lived in ancient Greece between 620 and 560 BCE. The fables remain a popular choice for moral education of children today. Many of the stories, such as The Fox and the Grapes (from which the idiom "sour grapes" derives), The Tortoise and the Hare, The North Wind and the Sun, The Boy Who Cried Wolf and The Ant and the Grasshopper are well-known throughout the world. Apollonius of Tyana, a 1st century CE philosopher, is recorded as having said about Aesop: ... like those who dine well off the plainest dishes, he made use of humble incidents to teach great truths, and after serving up a story he adds to it the advice to do a thing or not to do it. Then, too, he was really more attached to truth than the poets are; for the latter do violence to their own stories in order to make them probable; but he by announcing a story which everyone knows not to be true, told the truth by the very fact that he did not claim to be relating real events.

- De fabels van Aisopos, vaak ook Aisopische fabels of Aesopica genoemd, is een verzameling van fabels die toegeschreven worden aan de Griekse dichter Aisopos. Zijn verhalen zijn bekend om de dieren die zich gedragen als mensen. Aristoteles bericht van Aisopos dat hij een slaaf van Thracische oorsprong zou zijn. Mogelijkerwijze zijn veel van zijn dierfabels van Thracische herkomst. In 1703 verscheen de eerste volledige vertaling van een aantal fabels. De fabels van de Romeinse dichter Phaedrus en van de 17e-eeuwse Franse dichter La Fontaine zijn voor een groot deel op de fabels van Aisopos gebaseerd. In Rusland is de bewerking van de 19e-eeuwse auteur Ivan Krylov heel beroemd. Ook een anonieme middeleeuwse Nederlandstalige auteur liet zich hierdoor inspireren tot een bundel van fabels, genaamd Esopet.

As fábulas de Esopo tornaram-se um termo branco para coleções de fábulas brandas, usualmente envolvendo animais personificados. As fábulas remontam uma chance popular para educação moral de crianças hoje.
