Das Unternehmen wurde 1984 von Mike Woodroffe gegründet, um als Publisher für die Spiele von Scott Adams zu fungieren. Zu dieser Zeit arbeitete auch Alan Cox dort. Später begann Adventure Soft selbst Spiele zu produzieren und machte sich vor allem mit seinen Grafik-Adventures einen Namen. Anfang der 1990er produzierte das Unternehmen unter dem Namen Horror Soft mehrere Adventures, die sich durch die Handlung und die optische Umsetzung deutlich von den nachfolgenden Spielen unterschieden. Hierbei wurde großer Wert auf eine an Horrorfilme erinnernde Atmosphäre gelegt, die mit entsprechend blutigen Bildern und passender Musik erzeugt wurde. Zu diesen Spielen zählten Elvira: Mistress of the Dark, Elvira II: The Jaws of the Cerberus und Waxworks. Die Adventurespiel-Serie Simon the Sorcerer war Adventure Softs größter Erfolg und verschaffte ihnen besonders in Deutschland viele Fans. Nachdem 2002 nach vielen Verschiebungen der dritte Teil der Simon-Serie erschien und ein kommerzieller Flop wurde, entschied Adventure Soft sich für einen Imagewechsel. Die Softwareentwicklungs-Abteilung wurde bereits 1998 in Headfirst Productions umbenannt und produzierte bis zu ihrem Bankrott nur noch Spiele für externe Publisher. Im Februar/März 2006 wurde die Liquidation der Firma bekannt gegeben. Adventure Soft Publishing besteht allerdings weiterhin als Vertrieb für seine bisherigen Produkte.
