Levande ljus har däremot alltid varit en viktig del av julen. De få levande ljus man tillverkade i allmogehemmen sparades till julen. Under årets mörka tid fick man i övrigt nöja sig med att försöka se något i skenet från den öppna spisen. Elektriska adventsljusstakar i fönstren får hela Sveriges utseende att ändras "över en natt" vid just första advent. Numera förekommer det dock på många håll att de tas fram redan på fredagskvällen eller ännu tidigare i november. Dessa elektriska adventsljusstakar har för övrigt sju ljus, emedan det endast finns fyra adventssöndagar.
