The beach was awarded a Seaside Award in 2008, and the coastal waters are part of Pen Llŷn a'r Sarnau Special Area of Conservation, one of the largest marine designated sites in the United Kingdom. The coast itself forms part of Glannau Aberdaron ac Ynys Enlli Special Protection Area, and in 1956 was included in Llŷn Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty {Welsh: Ardal o Harddwch Naturiol Eithriadol Llŷn); it was designated a Heritage Coast in 1974. Cadw’r Lliw yn Llŷn, a programme to manage heathlands, was established in 2004, and has concentrated on Bardsey Island, Braich y Pwll and Mynydd Rhiw. Conservation Areas have been created in Aberdaron, Bardsey Island and Y Rhiw; and the area has been designated a Landscape of Historic Interest.
