- The Abayudaya are a Baganda community in eastern Uganda near the town of Mbale who practice Judaism. Although they are not genetically or historically related to other ethnic Jews, they are devout in their practice of the religion, keeping their version of kashruth, and observing Shabbat. There is however a group of people belonging predominantly to the "Kasume" Clan living in Bulegeni area who are indeed believed to be genetically (at least partly) Jews. The members of the Kasume Clan are distinctly different in appearance and physical features from other neighbouring tribal groups in Eastern Uganda. Very few of their elderly members of this clan are alive today as they have historically been victims of local and national political upheavals over the years. Many of these Jewish people worked with Semei Kakungulu in governing regions of Muyembe, Jibuzale, Sisiy, Bulegni and the establishment of distintly Judaic culture in Sirimityo. Some of their know anscestors are: Dathani Chemandwa, Yereni, Saulo Chemonges, Juma, Busenziyo, Yerimiya, Yosiya, Rufu, Loyce, Masiga, Yozef, Mika, Kasumbein. Their daughters are well known for their fair looks and work ethic hence falling prey to early ellopement and further dilution of their heritage. Although undocumented, there is a popular belief that some members of the Kasume Clan provided sanctuary to Jews of mixed heritage who fled persecution elsewhere and found themselves in Bulegeni and Gamatui. In the early 1960's Kasumbein was among the first ones to go to Israel and studied in Yad Ako Nathan Agricultural College. He later returned to become the coffee development officer of the then Bugisu District. There are several different villages where the Ugandan Jews live. Most of these are recognized by the Reform and Conservative sects of Judaism. However, the villagers of Putti are still seeking an Orthodox conversion and practice strict Rabbinical Judaism. Their population is estimated at approximately 1,100, having once been as large as 3,000 (prior to the persecutions of the Idi Amin regime); like their neighbors, they are subsistence farmers. Most Abayudaya are of Bagwere origin, except for those from Namutumba who are Basoga. They speak Luganda, Lusoga or Lugwere, although some have learned Hebrew as well.
- Die Abayudaya (Kinder von Juda) sind eine Gemeinschaft schwarzafrikanischer Juden, die in Uganda am Fuße des Mount Elgon hauptsächlich in Nabugoya bei Mbale und Pallisa lebt und etwa 750 Mitglieder umfasst. Die jüdische Gemeinde bildete sich um den Krieger Semei Kakungulu, der unter britischer Herrschaft zuerst protestantischen Glauben angenommen hatte. Nach dem Bruch mit den Briten wandte er sich der christlichen Sekte der Abamalaki zu, die jüdische Elemente in ihren Glauben aufgenommen hatte. Der jüdische Glauben faszinierte Kakungulu so sehr, dass er sich 1919 von den Abamalaki abwandte und erklärte, nun Jude zu sein und nach den jüdischen Geboten zu leben. Er scharte Anhänger um sich, mit denen er bei Mbale siedelte. Aber erst 1926, als die Gemeinde erstmals Kontakt zu einem weißen Juden hatte, der einige Zeit bei der Gemeinde verbrachte und sie die jüdischen Rituale lehrte, wurde der Glaube an Jesus Christus endgültig abgelegt. Während der Diktatur des Idi Amin begann eine Verfolgung der Abayudaya, die mittlerweile 3000 Personen und 30 Synagogen umfasste, die zum Tod vieler Gemeindemitglieder und zur Zerstörung aller Synagogen und der heiligen Bücher führte. Erst 2002 erfolgte eine teilweise Anerkennung durch die jüdische Weltgemeinde, als ein Rabbinergericht, ein Bet Din aus drei konservativen und einem Reform-Rabbiner über 400 Gemeindemitglieder offiziell zum Judentum konvertierte. Die Abayudaya hatten zu keiner Zeit Kontakt zu den Falascha, den Beta Israel in Äthiopien; von deren Existenz haben sie erst in den neunziger Jahren erfahren. Insgesamt unterhält die Gemeinde heute fünf Synagogen. Ihr spiritueller Leiter, Rabbi Gershom Sizomu, erwarb eine formelle rabbinische Ausbildung an der zum konservativen Judentum gehörenden University of Judaism in Los Angeles. Er wurde im Mai 2008 offiziell zum Rabbiner ordiniert. Die religiöse Musik der Abayudaya orientiert sich an der traditionellen jüdischen Liturgie, verwendet für die gesungenen Gebete aber häufig Melodien der örtlichen ugandischen Tradition. Darüber hinaus gibt es zahlreiche autochthone religiöse Lieder.

Encara que no són genèticament o històricament relacionat amb altres jueus, ho són en la seva pràctica de la religió, mantenint la versió de Kashruth i observar el Sàbat. Viuen en diferents tipus de pobles d'Uganda. La majoria d'aquests són reconeguts per la Reforma i les sectes del judaisme conservador. No obstant això, els pobletans de Putti segueixen buscant una conversió ortodoxa i la pràctica estricta del judaisme rabí. La seva població s'estima en aproximadament 1.100, després d'haver estat tan gran com 3.000 (abans de les persecucions del règim d'Idi Amin), igual que els seus veïns, són agricultors de subsistència.
