Aaldert Hendrik Wapstra was a Dutch physicist. Wapstra became a full professor in 1955 at the department of experimental physics at the Technische Hogeschool, now the Technical University in Delft, Netherlands. On the 18th of March 1963 Wapstra entered the board of the IKO, now known as NIKHEF, as the scientific director of nuclear spectroscopy. He became the director in 1971, succeeding Van Lieshout, where he continued on until 1982. He retired in 1987.

For this work he obtained the SUNAMCO medal of the The International Union of Pure and Applied Physics (IUPAP) in September 2004.

Hij trad daar toe tot de vakgroep experimentele fysica. Op 18 maart 1963 werd hij directielid van het IKO (Instuut voor Kernfysisch Onderzoek), de voorloper van het NIKHEF. Zijn functie was daar wetenschappelijk directeur kernspectroscopie. In 1971 werd hij algemeen directeur van het Nikhef wat hij tot 1982 zou blijven. Wapstra ging in 1987 met emeritaat. Wapstra is vooral bekend geworden door zijn bijdragen aan de Atomic Mass Evaluation, samen met zijn Italiaanse vakgenoot G. Audi. Voor dit werk kreeg hij in 2004 de SUNAMCO medaille van de IUPAP uitgereikt.
