A Split-Second was an electronic body music band from Belgium. The duo — Marc Ickx and Peter Bonne (under the artist name Chrismar Chayell) — were active from their debut in 1986 until they split up in 1991, and A Split-Second continued as an Ickx solo project. After signing to Antler Records, A Split-Second made their debut in 1986 with the track Flesh. It was followed the next year by another single, Rigor Mortis, and the album Ballistic Statues.

In 1988 they were signed to American label Wax Trax! Records and released the albums A Split-Second and From The Inside in the U.S. The single Rigor Mortis made it to the top of the alternative dance charts (Rockpool magazine) and stayed there for weeks. The singles Mambo Witch and Colosseum Crash were also chart-topping hits. New members Fedjean Venvelt (guitars) and Peter Boone (keyboards) joined the band for their first US tour. Their 1990 album Kiss of Fury featured the track The Parallax View which was also a successful single and saw the band moving towards more of a guitar-based sound. Nicolas Mansy (keyboards) joined the band for their second US tour. In 1991 Bonne became involved in a side project, Wasteland, which soon became more important for him than A Split-Second, which split up with Ickx continuing it as a solo project. Another album, Vengeance, was released in 1995. A Split-Second's debut single Flesh is credited with starting the New Beat genre when DJ Marc Grouls played the 45 rpm single at 33 rpm in the nightclub Boccaccio in Ghent. In 2002, Perfecto Records released a progressive trance remix of Flesh, produced by Paul Oakenfold.

Voorheen was Ickx al enkele jaren actief in een gelijknamige band met een meer klassieke rockbezetting: Ickx zelf (bass + vocals), Filip Verstraeten (synths), Willem Rotthier (leadgitaar), Wim Weyers (gitaar + synths) en Fons Heymans (drums). Van deze oude bezetting bestaan geen officiële opnamen, en de groep leek dood te bloeden door muzikale meningsverschillen tussen 'old school classic rock' en de meer progressieve, experimentele richting die Ickx uit wilde. In de oude bezetting werden wel reeds nummers zoals Neuro Beat en The Parallax View geboren. Ickx en Bonne begonnen demo's op te nemen in de Micrart studio Attne D and E, en later in de Top Studio in Gent. Toen Bonne naar Gent verhuisde, ontmoette hij Peter Gillis, de eigenaar van de TOP Studio. Daar namen ze hun eerste officiële nummers op en kreeg Bonne enkele lessen van Gillis in de opnametechnieken. Op dat moment krijgt Bonne de artiestennaam Chrismar Chayell en is A Split-Second geboren. Eind 1985 en begin 1986 experimenteerden ze met geluid om een totaal eigen geluid te creëren. Vervolgens stuurden ze enkele cd's naar critici om te horen wat zij er van vonden, via via kwam een van die cd's bij Antler Records terecht en kregen ze hun eerste platendeal. In 1986 brachten ze hun eerste 12" uit, deze bevatte de nummer On Command, Body Check, Burnout en Flesh. Hun eerste LP "Ballistic Statues" werd uitgebracht in 1987. Bekende nummers van deze LP zijn "Flesh", "Rigor Mortis", "Colosseum Crash", "Mambo Witch" en "Parallax View". Het nummer "Flesh" was een van de eerste New Beat-nummers. Dit genre ontstond toen DJ Marc Grouls in de club Boccaccio in Gent de 45 rpm-single van "Flesh" op 33 1/3 rpm draaide. Nadat Ballistic Statues was uitgebracht werd de band versterkt door Peter Meyvaert en Swan, beiden op gitaar. In 1987 waren ze bijna het hele jaar op tour door Europa.
