The 7" single version is an edit of the album version which omits the initial guitar and keyboard only introduction, a few bars between verses and goes to a fade out halfway through the guitar solo ending, making it some two minutes shorter. Versions released on various compilations such as Standing on a Beach as the "single" version vary slightly from the 7" single edit in that they restore the guitar solo ending to its full length.

La canción tiene un tono distinto al del resto del álbum. La batería de Lol Tolhurst, semejante a una caja de ritmos, y las frenéticas líneas de bajo de Simon Gallup consiguen alimentar la atmósfera de la persecución por el bosque. Algunos críticos consideran que dicha canción es la que mejor resume el sonido de The Cure. La canción fue la primera en aparecer en "Top of the Pops" y ha sido regrabada varias veces por the Cure, entre otras ocasiones para los recopilatorios Mixed up y Join the Dots. Se han realizado numerosas versiones de la canción, como la de Nouvelle Vague en su álbum de debut. Vervolgens komen de drums (die nogal vreemd klinken omdat de geluidsband van de drums achterstevoren is afgespeeld). De tekst gaat over een ik-persoon die door een bos loopt, zoekend naar een meisje. Deze wordt niet gevonden en er wordt gesuggereerd dat het meisje er zelfs nooit was (the girl was never there) of dat de bezongen persoon in het bos is verdwaald (lost in a forest). De sfeer van het nummer is erg duister en grimmig. Dit was kenmerkend voor de Wave-muziek. A Forest is een New Wave-klassieker geworden.
