  • A Christian Ministry in the National Parks (ACMNP) is the largest and the oldest ecumenical Christian ministry serving the United States National Parks. In over a half a century of service, ACMNP has served the needs of millions of tourist and park employees. ACMNP was started by a Princeton University Seminarian, Warren Ost, who was working as a bellhop at the Old Faithful Inn in Yellowstone National Park in 1945. During his first summer in the park, Ost started a Bible study and a choir. In 1952, shortly after being ordained a Presbyterian Minister, Rev. Ost, with the blessing of the National Park Service (NPS) officially founded "A Protestant Ministry in the National Parks" but almost instantly changed the name to "A Christian Ministry in the National Parks. " Every year between 250–300 seminary and college students serve in about 65 different locations at around 30 different national parks. The ministry is set up around a "worker-priest" model, wherein the students obtain jobs with the National Park Service or various concessionaires around the park and then volunteer their time to provide Christian worship services, Bible studies, and choirs. ACMNP is recognized by over 40 denominations and was part of the National Council of Churches until it was recognized as a "valid, independent, interdenominational movement" in 1972.
