ATS owner Günther Schmidt had sponsored various national motorsport events, before realising Grand Prix racing was an ideal way of promoting his brand. Due to his temper, Schmidt was notoriously difficult to work with, and a rapid turnover of staff plagued ATS for their entire history.

Als Teamchef fungierte jedoch ausschließlich Schmid. Er war in den 1960er-Jahren selbst Rennfahrer gewesen und hatte eine Reihe von Rennen in der Formel V bestritten. Seine letzten Rennen fuhr er 1972, als er sich bereits hauptberuflich bei dem Felgenhersteller engagierte. Danach sponserte Schmid verschiedene nationale Motorsportveranstaltungen, bevor sich sein Unternehmen aktiv am Motorsport beteiligte, um für die Marke ATS zu werben.

W historii Formuły 1 kierowcy ATS zdobyli tylko 8 punktów w 99 wyścigach Grand Prix. Najlepszy wynik - piąte miejsce - uzyskano trzykrotnie. W latach 1977-1982 zespół używał silników Forda. Ekspansja jednostek napędowych z turbodoładowaniem spowodowała, iż w 1983 roku ATS również dołączył do grona użytkowników tego typu silników. Dostawcą został bawarski koncern BMW. Umowa z BMW nie przyniosła jednak spodziewanych korzyści. Po dwóch sezonach, w których ATS nie zdobył żadnego punktu, BMW zrezygnowało z dalszej współpracy. Günther Schmidt nie zdołał znaleźć nowego dostawcy silników i zespół zniknął ze sceny F1 wraz z końcem 1984 roku.
