Po wojnie, w latach 1922-27, pracował w Genewie w sekretariacie Ligi Narodów. Jest autorem licznych nowel i opowieści kryminalnych. Jest także członkiem londyńskiego Sherlock Holmes Society. Wielki erudyta o dużym poczuciu humoru i wyjątkowej bezstronności w spojrzeniu na fakty. Zginął podczas niemieckiego bombardowania Oksfordu podczas II wojny światowej 16 stycznia 1941 roku.
