8 mm film is a motion picture film format in which the filmstrip is eight millimeters wide. Il formato Super 8 (un'evoluzione dell'8 mm) sopravvive sino ai giorni nostri, sebbene venga adoperato (soprattutto in bianco e nero) per ottenere immagini fortemente caratterizzate da un certo sapore retrò o citazionistico. In particolar modo, la grande richiesta di pellicole Super 8 negli anni 90 ha portato la Kodak a ricominciare la produzione di queste pellicole. Le pellicole in bianco e nero doppio 8 ancora in commercio sono: la Foma, la Cine X ed altre; le pellicole a colori doppio 8 ancora in commercio sono invece il Cinecolor ed il Cinechrome.

Het Nederlands Instituut voor Beeld en Geluid beheert de gehele collectie van het vroegere Smalfilmmuseum. Deze collectie zal eind 2009 gedigitaliseerd zijn en toegankelijk gemaakt worden voor publiek.
