The 31st Mechanized Infantry Regiment "Asturias" is an mechanized infantry unit in the Spanish Army. It was created in the autonomous region of Asturias on July 6, 1703. Its first commander was Álvaro Navia Osorio y Vigil, Viscount of Puerto de Vega and Marquis de Santa Cruz de Marcenado. The regiment initially consisted of 600 men. It was also known as El Cangrejo, a name which it obtained following the campaign in Roussillon from 1793 to 1795, during which it never retreated.

Fue creado el 6 de julio de 1703 en el Principado de Asturias, recibiendo la denominación de Tercio de Asturias. Su primer jefe fue Álvaro Navia Osorio y Vigil, vizconde del Puerto y marqués de Santa Cruz de Marcenado. Se componía de 600 hombres, en esta primera etapa. Conocido también con el sobrenombre de "El Cangrejo", apelativo que obtuvo después de la campaña de Rosellón (1793-1795) durante la cual jamás volvió la espalda al enemigo en ninguna de las retiradas que se vio forzado a hacer. Tiene como patrona a la Virgen de Covadonga.

Założony został jako Tercio de Asturias 6 lipca 1703. Od roku 1707 zwany: Regimiento de Infantería Asturias nº 14. Numer 31 zyskał w 1841 roku. Nowy pułk Filip V Burbon zaangażował do obrony swej sprawy w czasie wojny sukcesyjnej hiszpańskiej (1700-1714). W Galicii walczył z Portugalią. Potem walczył w Italii by wrócić w 1714 pomagać zdobyć miasto Barcelona. W 1732 brał udział w wyprawie na Oran, port w rękach Turków od roku 1708. W roku 1744 walczył w bitwie pod Monte Albano przeciw Austriakom . W 1746 w Orzolengho musiał się poddać otoczony przez przeważające siły wroga.
