The group signed with Immortal Records and Virgin Records. The group's debut single, "Capricorn (A Brand New Name)", entered the Billboard's Hot Mainstream Rock Tracks at Number 40 on 7 September 2002 and reached Number 31 on the 5 October. The second single, "Edge of the Earth", failed to match the success of "Capricorn (A Brand New Name)"; it did not chart. The band released their debut album, 30 Seconds to Mars, on 13 August 2002, the only one to feature all original founding members. The album debuted at Number 1 on Billboard's Top Heatseekers on 14 September 2002. After three years, the band released their second album, A Beautiful Lie, on 16 August 2005, and was a commercial success. It reached the Number 22 on Billboard's Hot Modern Rock Tracks and the Number 38 on the Hot Mainstream Rock Tracks. The second single from the album, "The Kill", follows the success of the precedent. It broke a record on Billboard's Hot Modern Rock Tracks chart by remaining on the chart for 52 weeks, where reached the Number 3. It also reached the Number 14 on Billboard's Hot Mainstream Rock Tracks and the Number 17 on the Hot Singles Recurrents. The third single from the album, "From Yesterday", follows the success of the precedent. It reached the Number 1 on Billboard's Hot Modern Rock Tracks, the Number 11 on the Hot Mainstream Rock Tracks and the Number 1 on the Bubbling Under Hot 100 Singles, because it entered on the Billboard Hot 100. The fourth and last international single of the album, "A Beautiful Lie", is considered a commercially available single. It reached the Number 37 on the Modern Rock Tracks. As of April 2008, A Beautiful Lie sold more than three million copies worldwide. In April 2008, the band released their fifth singles, "The Story", only in Argentina. In 2009, the band will release their third studio album called This Is War.
