It was won by the Blue Bulls, who defeated the Free State Cheetahs 42-33 in the final at Loftus Versfeld on 23 October 2004. It was the first of three consecutive finals contested between the Blue Bulls and Free State Cheetahs. André Watson became the first-ever official to referee seven Currie Cup finals.
