  • The 2000 Stanley Cup playoffs, the championship of the National Hockey League (NHL), began in April, and concluded in June. The sixteen teams that qualified, eight from each conference, played best-of-7 series for conference quarterfinals, semifinals and championships, and then the conference champions played a best-of-7 series for the Stanley Cup. The playoffs ended when the New Jersey Devils defeated the reigning champions the Dallas Stars in a six game series to win their second Stanley Cup title in their history. Devils defenseman Scott Stevens was awarded the Conn Smythe Trophy as the MVP of the playoffs. For the first time in history both the Boston Bruins and Montreal Canadiens missed the playoffs in the same season. Until the 2012 Stanley Cup playoffs, this was the most recent time the Florida Panthers made the playoffs. However, they clinched a playoff that year, therefore ending the then-longest NHL playoff drought.
