In their 15th year under head coach John McKay, the Trojans compiled a 10–1–1 record (6–0–1 against conference opponents), finished in second place in the Pacific-8 Conference (Pac-8), and outscored their opponents by a combined total of 363 to 142. The team was ranked #1 in the final UPI Coaches Poll and #2 in the final AP Poll.
