- The 1972–73 NHL season was the 56th season of the National Hockey League. Sixteen teams each played 78 games. For the first time since the collapse of the Western Hockey League in 1926, the National Hockey League had serious competition. A new professional hockey league, the World Hockey Association, made its season debut with 12 new teams, many of which were based in the same cities as NHL teams. Unlike the Western Hockey League, though, the new World Hockey Association would not challenge for the Stanley Cup. In response to the new league, the NHL hastily added two new teams in an unplanned expansion, the New York Islanders and Atlanta Flames, in an attempt to exclude the WHA from newly constructed arenas in those markets. The first thing the WHA did was sign Bobby Hull, and the Chicago Black Hawks sued, claiming a violation of the reserve clause in NHL contracts. Others soon followed Hull to the WHA, including Bernie Parent, J. C. Tremblay, Ted Green, Gerry Cheevers and Johnny McKenzie. In the expansion draft, the New York Islanders and Atlanta Flames made their picks and eleven Islander players skipped off to the WHA. The California Golden Seals, chafing under the unorthodox ownership of the unpopular Charlie Finley, were also a victim of the WHA, losing eight key players. Prior to the start of the season, the 1972 Summit Series, which was the first ever meeting between Soviet Union and NHL calibre Canadian ice hockey players, took place. Canada expected to easily beat the Soviets, but were shocked to find themselves with a losing record of one win, two losses, and a tie after four games in Canada. In game four, which Canada lost 5–3, Vancouver fans echoed the rest of Canada's thoughts of Team Canada's poor performance by booing them off the ice. The final four games were played in the Soviet Union. Canada lost game five, but won the last three for a final record of four wins, three losses, and a tie. The Montreal Canadiens won the Stanley Cup by beating the Chicago Black Hawks four games to two in the finals. No teams in the playoffs swept their opponents, the last time this would happen until 1991.

Hatten die Chicago Black Hawks in den beiden vergangen Jahren immer um die 20 Punkte Vorsprung, schmolz er in diesem Jahr auf acht Punkte zusammen. Philadelphia und Minnesota hatten den Anschluss geschafft. Vor über 30 Jahren spielten das letzte mal zwei Teams aus derselben Stadt in der NHL und wie damals war es wieder New York, die nun mit den New York Islanders ein zweites Team hatten. Auch der Südosten sollte nun an der NHL teilhaben. Im Bundesstaat Georgia traten die Atlanta Flames an. Erst nur belächelt, startete in dieser Saison die WHA als zweite professionelle Eishockeyliga in ihre erste Saison. 6 der 12 Teams spielten in NHL Städten. Nachdem sich einige NHL Stars wie Bobby Hull, Gerry Cheevers, Bernie Parent und Derek Sanderson der neuen Liga anschlossen, verstummte das Lachen. Vor der Saison war es zu einer denkwürdigen acht Spiele dauernden Serie zwischen Kanada und der UdSSR gekommen. Obwohl Bobby Orr verletzungsbedingt fehlte und man die Spieler die in die WHA gewechselt waren ausgeschlossen hatte, entschied Kanada die Serie für sich.

Narychlo tak byly do NHL přijaty týmy Atlanta Flames a New York Islanders, aby nově zbudované arény v těchto městech nepadly do rukou některého z klubů WHA.
- La saison LNH 1972-73 a été la 56 saison régulière de la ligue nationale de hockey. Seize équipes ont joué chacune 78 matchs. Pour la première fois depuis la fin de la Ligue de hockey Canadienne de l'Ouest, la LNH a de la concurrence sérieuse avec le début de l'Association mondiale de hockey (AMH). Cette ligue regroupe alors 12 équipes dont la majorité est située dans des villes où des franchises de la LNH existent déjà. Cependant, contrairement aux autres ligues précédentes, l'AMH n'a pas de vue sur la Coupe Stanley. Afin de lutter contre cette nouvelle ligue, la LNH crée deux nouvelles franchises: les Islanders de New York et les Flames d'Atlanta. Au début de la saison, la Série du siècle a lieu et constitue la première série de rencontres entre le Canada et l'Union soviétique. Les Canadiens pensent remporter facilement la série mais après les quatre premiers matchs à domicile, ils n'ont gagné qu'une fois et fait un match nul. Afin de gagner la série, il faut donc que les Canadiens l'emportent en URSS à trois reprises minimum ce qui est fait au terme d'un beau retournement de situation.
