In its third season under head coach Jim Owens, the team compiled a 10–1 record, finished in first place in the inaugural season of the Athletic Association of Western Universities, defeated Wisconsin in the 1960 Rose Bowl, and outscored all opponents by a combined total of 253 to 73.
