Led by Colonel Marmaduque Grove, the troops arrested the President, Luis Altamirano, and then handed the power to General Pedro Dartnell as interim President. The organizers of the coup hoped to recall former president Arturo Alessandri, who had been forced into exile after the September Junta's coming to power. However, General Dartnell ultimately refused to rule alone and formed the January Junta a few days later, handing power to Emilio Bello Codecido. Alessandri only returned from exile in March 20, 1925, putting an end to the junta.

El 23 de enero de 1925 un grupo de oficiales ingresó y se apoderó del Palacio de La Moneda, apresando a Altamirano y a los demás miembros de la junta. Esta intervención militar se hizo en favor del reestablecimiento en el cargo del presidente Arturo Alessandri Palma A la espera del regreso del presidente constitucional, se instaló una junta de gobierno presidida por Pedro Pablo Dartnell, que sería reemplazado a los pocos días por Emilio Bello Codecido.
