Spécialisé dans le renseignement, il fait partie, depuis 2002, de la Brigade des forces spéciales terre (BFST) et dépend, pour emploi, du Chef d'état-major des armées et, par délégation, de la Direction du renseignement militaire (DRM) ou du Commandement des opérations spéciales (COS). Le 13 dragons est un des plus anciens régiments de cavalerie français. Dans le cadre de la réforme de la carte militaire, le régiment, actuellement implanté à Dieuze, en Moselle, devrait être déplacé en 2011 au Camp de Souge en Gironde.
