It remains an active duty unit of the Iowa National Guard, currently serving in Iraq. There are 3 troops that comprise the 1/113th cavalry. A and B troops drill out of Camp Dodge Iowa; and C troop which is out of Lemars Iowa. C troop returned from Iraq in October 2006. A troop is deploying in June 2007. Prior to World War II, the 113th Troop B was a horse cavalry. As preparations for an impending war, Troop B was sent to train in Brownwood, Texas at Camp Bowie. On December 7, 1941 members of Troop B used their day off to go into Brownwood to have professional photos taken of themselves in full dress uniforms. They returned to Camp Bowie and noticed soldiers scurrying everywhere. They asked what was going on and were told, "The Japanese bombed Pearl Harbor. We're in the war now. " That night, members of Troop B were assigned to patrol the dam north of Brownwood. Army officials feared that the Japanese would bomb the dam and flood the largest WWII Army base in the U.S. While stationed at Camp Bowie, members of Troop B participated in grueling cavalry exercises in Louisiana. The Army was considering disbanding horse cavalry (believed to be an outmoded form of warfare). The exercises in Louisiana were designed to proved to the Army that soldiers are horses were capable of anything. The Army thought otherwise. In 1942, the horse cavalry was disbanded. Members of Troop B had to choose another assignment. Some chose to stay in the newly formed Troop B mechanized cavalry. Others choose paratrooper training. Members of the mechanized cavalry fought in France, clearing hedgerows and mopping up after the Normandy invasion, and later fought in the Battle of the Bulge.
