The station broadcasts a mix of adult-contemporary music, and is owned by UTV Radio who operate neighbouring stations Radio Wave 96.5 in Blackpool and The Fylde, Wish FM in Wigan and St Helens as well as Wire FM in Warrington, Widnes and Runcorn. Their transmitter is sited on Bee Lane in Penwortham, and uses 100 watts in the vertical plane and 33 watts in the horizontal. Central commenced test transmissions using 106.5 on 1 September, 2008. Plans for a relay for Chorley and Leyland on 96.3 FM were abandoned. Central Radio launched on Thursday 25 September 2008 at 7am. Following Ofcom relaxations on local programming requirements, the station began taking UTV's networked evening and overnight shows in late March 2009. As of the 2009/10 season, the station also holds exclusive FM commentary rights for football club Preston North End's home and away Championship fixtures, although a rights agreement prevents listeners from hearing the commentary via Central's internet feed.
