İsmet Vehit Güney (1932 - 23 June 2009), was an Cypriot artist, cartoonist, teacher and painter. He is best known as the designer of the modern flag of the Republic of Cyprus, the country's coat of arms and the original Cyprus lira in 1960. Güney's design is unique, as the Republic of Cyprus' is the only country in the world to display a map on its flag.

- İsmet Vehit Güney, was een Cypriotisch beeldend kunstenaar en cartoonist. Hij was de ontwerper van de vlag van Cyprus. Na een lerarenopleiding begon hij in 1948 te werken als kunstleraar. Van 1948 tot 1977 volgde hij 'Lefkoşa Erkek Lisesi' om er kunst en geschiedenis te studeren. In 1956 ontmoette hij de bekende kunstenaar İbrahim Çallı en werkte tot 1960 bij hem. Güney nam deel aan vele tentoonstellingen waaronder een groot retrospectief van zijn werken in Nicosia in 1986. Vóór de vlag van Cyprus werd ingevoerd, werden zowel de vlag van Turkije als die van Griekenland gebruikt. De huidige vlag was het resultaat van een wedstrijd uit 1960. Het ontwerp mocht om zo neutraal mogelijk te zijn geen rode of blauwe kleur (de kleuren van de vlaggen van Turkije en van Griekenland) bevatten, noch een kruis of een halve maan. Het winnend ontwerp was dat van İsmet Güney en werd uitgekozen door president Makarios III. De witte vlag werd gekozen als symbool van vrede tussen de twee gemeenschappen van het jonge land. De kaart van Cyprus is kopergeel van kleur, dat voor een duidelijker afbeelding zorgt dan de originele kleur van koper, waarnaar het eiland genoemd is. De twee olijftakken symboliseren de vrede tussen de gemeenschappen van het eiland.

Dünya Savaşı'nda İngiliz ordusunda görev yaptı. O yıllarda İngiltere yönetimindeki Filistin'e bağlı Hayfa'daki İngiliz Askeri Akademisi'nde askeri konuların yanı sıra resim eğitimi de aldı. İbrahim Çallı ile tanıştı ve birlikte çalıştı. Çallı gibi o da izlenimci resim akımından etkilendi. 1947'de kişisel sergisini açan ilk Kıbrıslı Türk ressam oldu. Eserleri pek çok karma ve kişisel sergide yer aldı, ödüller kazandı. Karikatürleri İstiklâl ve Köylü gibi Kıbrıs gazetelerinde yayımlandı. 1960 yılında kurulan Kıbrıs Cumhuriyeti'nin bayrağının, ambleminin ve Kıbrıs Lirasının tasarımlarını yaptı. Bizzat Kıbrıs Cumhurbaşkanı III. Makarios, İsmet Güney'in tasarımlarını resmi bayrak ve amblem olarak seçti. 1977'ye kadar Lefkoşa Türk Erkek Lisesi'nde resim ve sanat tarihi öğretmenliği yaptı. 1986 yılında KKTC hükümeti kendisine Kültür Sanat Hizmet Ödülü verdi. 24 Haziran 2004 tarihinde Lefkoşa Atatürk Kültür Merkezi'nde Kuzey Kıbrıs Cumhurbaşkanı Mehmet Ali Talat'ında katıldığı bir törenden sonra Lefkoşa Mezarlığı'nda toprağa verildi.
