Árbær is a suburb in Reykjavík, Iceland. Based in eastern part of the city, the Árbær neighborhood is well known for its natural surroundings and pristine nature. The Valley of Elliðaár and the river flowing through are at the heart of Árbær. The area has approximately 13,000 inhabitants. The local sports club is Fylkir, who play in the Icelandic Premier League and are two times Icelandic Cup winners.

  • Árbær ist ein Freilichtmuseum in Island. Früher war dieser Bauernhof noch eine Reitetappe von Reykjavík entfernt, heute liegt er innerhalb der Stadtgrenzen. In dem Areal sind etwa 30 historische Gebäude aus der Hauptstadt und anderen Landesteilen wieder aufgebaut. Häufig zeigen dort Handwerker im Rentenalter ihre Kunst, wie Goldschmiede, Drucker und Fischer. Eine Grassodenkirche wird auch heute noch gelegentlich für Hochzeiten benutzt. In einem anderen Haus mit einer Druckerwerkstatt wird die einzige Druckerpresse gezeigt, mit der in Island jemals selber Geld gedruckt wurde (in den Wirren der Zweiten Weltkriegs). Man kann sich auch die einzige Lokomotive Islands und die Planungen von Eisenbahnlinien ansehen. Auf dem Museumsgelände gibt es ein Café. Das Museum ist in der Winterzeit allerdings nur für Gruppen (nach Vereinbarung) zugänglich.

Namnet har troligen betydelsen "Den tidiga byn", jmfr "Ár-" med engelskans "early" och svenskans "arla". I Árbær är Árbæaejarsafn beläget, ett slags museum dit några äldre hus är flyttade och där man anordnar utställningar. I Árbær finns även ett av Reykjaviks modernaste badhus, Árbæjarlaug.
