Kapal tersebut dibangun di bawah arahan di galangan kapal The Joseph dan Samuel Sterett di Harris Creek di komunitas kemaritiman , dan diluncurkan pada 7 September 1797. Essa si distinse per aver fatto parte della classe delle prime sei fregate della US Navy ordinate nel 1794 e la prima a veleggiare con la bandiera della già nominata Marina. L'originale USS Constellation venne costruita nel 1797 da Joshua Humphreys e demolita nel 1853 al Gosport Navy Yard di Norfolk, Virginia. La città di Baltimora ne costruì una seconda nel 1854 e solo nel 1991 si è potuto affermare che furono costruite due navi diverse. (it)
- De USS Constellation (1797) was een fregat, bewapend met 38 kanonnen, en een van de originele fregatten gebouwd naar aanleiding van de Marinewet van 1797. Ze werd gerenommeerd als het eerste Amerikaanse marineschip voor actieve diensten op zee en het eerste Amerikaanse zeilschip dat vocht in een zeeslag en vijandelijke schepen overwon en buitmaakte. Ze werd gebouwd in 1797, en uit dienst gesteld in 1853. Er werd in 1853 een tweede "USS Constellation" gebouwd als replica van het 18e-eeuwse zeilschip, dat tevens werd gesloopt. Deze "USS Constellation" uit 1853 ligt nu in de binnenhavendok van Downtown Baltimore in Maryland, Verenigde Staten. (nl)

It was built under the direction of David Stodder at The Joseph and Samuel Sterett shipyard on Harris Creek in Baltimore's Fell's Point maritime community, and was launched on 7 September 1797. The ship was one of the original six frigates whose construction the Naval Act of 1794 had authorized. (en)
