A shallow foundation is a type of building foundation that transfers structural load to the earth very near to the surface, rather than to a subsurface layer or a range of depths, as does a deep foundation. Customarily, a shallow foundation is considered as such when the width of the entire foundation is greater than its depth. In comparison to deep foundations, shallow foundations are less technical, thus making them more economical and the most widely used for relatively light structures.

- Platta på mark är en relativt enkel grundläggning med en betongkonstruktion direkt på mark utan underliggande utrymme. Platta på mark är en mycket vanlig konstruktion i varmare klimat där det inte finns risk för tjälhävning och där termiter förekommer som kan angripa bjälklag av trä. In generale, le fondazioni non sono mai realizzate al livello originario del terreno perché, al fine di una necessaria durabilità, bisogna raggiungere almeno quegli strati di terreno che non risentono della variazione stagionale del contenuto d'acqua, che non sono interessati da fenomeni di gelo e che comunque sono al di sotto della coltre di terreno vegetale.
