Sergio Silvio Balanzino (Bologna, 20 June 1934) is an Italian diplomat. He studied as a Brittingham Foreign Scholar at the University of Wisconsin in Madison 1956-57. After graduating in Law from the University of Rome La Sapienza he joined the Italian foreign service in 1958. Balanzino, who had gone back to being Deputy, again took over the reins until he was replaced on December 5, 1995 by Javier Solana. He now teaches in the springtime at the Loyola University Chicago Rome Center.

Balanzino studierte in Rom Rechtswissenschaften und arbeitete dann beim italienischen Außenministerium als Diplomat, insbesondere im Wirtschaftsbereich. In den 1960er Jahren trat er in die Dienste der NATO. In den Jahren danach arbeitete er immer wieder auch für das italienische Außenministerium, zuletzt als Botschafter in Kanada. 1994 übernahm er nach dem Tod des NATO-Generalsekretärs Manfred Wörner vorübergehend dessen Amtsgeschäfte, nach dem Rücktritt von Willy Claes erneut. Balanzino blieb von 1994 bis 2001 als stellvertretender Generalsekretär bei der NATO.

He was then replaced by Willy Claes on October 17, 1994 who resigned on alleged corruption charges on October 20, 1995. Balanzino, who had gone back to being Deputy, again took over the reins until he was replaced on December 5, 1995 by Javier Solana. He now teaches in the springtime at the Loyola University Chicago Rome Center.
