Seminary priests were Roman Catholic priests who were trained in English seminaries or houses of study on the European continent after the introduction of laws forbidding Roman Catholicism in Britain. Such Seminaries included that at Douay, from 1568, and others at Rome from 1579, Valladolid from 1589, Seville from 1592, St Omer (later at Bruges and Liège) from 1593, and Lisbon from 1628. The English College at Douai was transferred to Rheims during the years 1578–1593.

Le terme de « prêtre du séminaire » distingue en particulier les hommes de ceux qui avaient été formés en Angleterre à une époque antérieure, en particulier, au temps de la reine Marie Ire. Ces derniers, souvent appelés « prêtres maristes », et ceux qui les avaient précédés, furent en effet ordonnés prêtres à une époque où le système de formation des prêtres dans des séminaires n’avait pas encore été introduit dans l’Église catholique. Les prêtres maristes n’étaient donc pas des prêtres du séminaire parce que cette institution devait être instituée par le concile de Trente. Les séminaires anglais comprennent celui de Douai, dès 1568, puis les autres à Rome après 1579, Valladolid après 1589, Séville après 1592, Saint-Omer (plus tard, à Bruges et Liège) à partir de 1593, et Lisbonne après 1628. Le collège anglais de Douai a été transféré à Reims pendant les années 1578-1593. Le premier des prêtres du séminaire à mourir pour sa foi est saint Cuthbert Mayne, raison pour laquelle il est parfois honoré du titre de « premier martyr des prêtres du Séminaire ». (fr)

The English College at Douai was transferred to Rheims during the years 1578–1593. The term "seminary priest" distinguishes these men especially from those trained at an earlier period in England. In particular, those ordained in the time of Queen Mary I are often called "Marian Priests". These latter priests and others ordained at a still earlier period were not "seminary priests" in any sense because in the Roman Catholic Church of their day the system of training priests in seminaries had not yet been introduced. The institution of seminaries followed the Council of Trent. The first of the seminary priests to die for his faith was Saint Cuthbert Mayne and for this he is sometimes referred to by the title of "protomartyr of the seminary priests". (en)
