A saddle roof is a roof form which follows a convex curve about one axis and a concave curve about the other. The hyperbolic paraboloid form has been used for roofs at various times since it is easily constructed from straight sections of lumber, steel, or other conventional materials. The term is used because the form resembles the shape of a saddle. Sometimes referred to as a hypar, the saddle roof may also be formed as a tensegrity structure. Mathematically, a saddle shape contains at least one saddle point.

Sie weisen in ihrer Geometrie Parallelen zu Seilnetzen auf und sind besonders leicht mit HP-förmigen zu verwechseln, etwa dem der stilprägenden Dorton Arena. Hyparschalen sind aber meist aus Stahlbeton gefertigt und zählen in diesem Fall zu den . Auch gibt es wenige Schalenbauten aus Faserbeton und Nadelholzbrettern. Diesen Materialien kommt zugute, dass das hyperbolische Paraboloid zu den Regelflächen gehört, dass also durch jeden Punkt der Fläche eine – in diesem Fall sogar zwei – Geraden gehen, die ganz in der Fläche enthalten sind. Somit lassen sich Hyparschalen trotz ihrer Doppelkrümmung mit geraden, am besten schmalen Brettern einschalen oder direkt daraus herstellen. An den Rändern der an sich dünnen Schalen befinden sich je nach Konstruktion massive Träger, die sogenannten Randträger. Für die Dachdeckung kommen die unterschiedlichsten Materialien zum Einsatz.
