| - Η Κόκκινη Μηλιά, σύμφωνα με τις παραδόσεις του ελληνικού λαού, είναι θρυλικός τόπος προς τον οποίο θα εκδιωχθούν οι Τούρκοι από την Κωνσταντινούπολη. Σύμφωνα με την παράδοση, μετά την απελευθέρωση της Βυζαντινής πρωτεύουσας, θα πρωτοστατήσει ο «Μαρμαρωμένος Βασιλιάς» που θα εγερθεί από τον ύπνο του και θα προσκυνήσει στην Αγιά Σοφιά. Από την λαογραφική έρευνα που είχε κάνει ο Νικόλαος Πολίτης, η Κόκκινη Μηλιά αντιστοιχεί προς το Μονοδένδριο των προ της Άλωσης βυζαντινών χρησμών και προφητειών που λέγονταν κατά τις επικίνδυνες πολιορκίες που αντιμετώπιζε η Κωνσταντινούπολη. Το πώς όμως και πότε αντικαταστάθηκε το Μονοδένδριο με την Κόκκινη Μηλιά, αλλά και σε ποιούς λόγους στηρίχθηκε η δεύτερη, παραμένει άγνωστο. Πιθανώς σχετικός είναι ο τουρκικός μύθος για το Κόκκινο Μήλο (Kizil elma), που συμβολίζει τον υπέρτατο στόχο κατάκτησης. Αρχικά χαρακτηρίστηκε Κόκκινο Μήλο η Κωνσταντινούπολη, και μετά η Ρώμη, η Βιέννη και η Μόσχα. Ο μύθος και ο όρος χρησιμοποιούνται και στη σύγχρονη εποχή. Αριστεροί και δεξιοί εθνικιστές που φοβούνται διάλυση της Τουρκίας αν ενταχθεί στην Ευρωπαϊκή Ένωση, αυτοαποκαλούνται «Συνασπισμός του Κόκκινου Μήλου». Τον μύθο επικαλέστηκε ο πρόεδρος της Τουρκίας Ερντογάν κατά τη στρατιωτική επιχείρηση της Τουρκίας εναντίον Κούρδων στην περιοχή Αφρίν της Συρίας, στις αρχές του 2018. (el)

According to the folklore research conducted by Nikolaos Politis, the Red Apple Tree corresponds to Monodendrio of the pre-Fall Byzantine oracles and prophecies said during the dangerous sieges faced by Constantinople. However, how and when Monodendrio was replaced by the Red Apple Tree, but also what reasons the second one was based on, remains unknown. Probably, the Turkish legend of the Red Apple (Kizil elma), which symbolizes the ultimate goal of conquest, is relevant. Constantinople was first labelled as the Red Apple, followed by Rome, Vienna and Moscow. The legend and the term are also used in modern times. Left and right-wing nationalists who fear a break-up of Turkey if it joins the European Union call themselves the "Red Apple Coalition". The legend was invoked by Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan during the Turkish military operation against Kurds in Syria’s Afrin Region in the early 2018. (en)
