A rapa das bestas is the name given to the annual curro (roundup) of wild horses celebrated the first Friday, Saturday, Sunday and Monday of July in Sabucedo, A Estrada (Pontevedra), Spain. Across more than 200 km2 of hillside currently more than six-hundred horses roam freely in fourteen droves, referred to in Galician as bestas (mares) and garañones (stallions). La rapa das bestas (rapada de les bèsties) consisteix a recollir cavalls salvatges, ficar-los al curro (recinte tancat), tallar-los les crineres i, en l'actualitat, marcar-los amb microxips. És una festa que se celebra a diverses localitats de Galícia, però la de Sabucedo és la més important i coneguda. Hi ha diverses característiques que diferencien la rapa de Sabucedo de les d'altres localitats. La més important consisteix que no s'utilitzen cordes, pals o altres aparells per reduir a l'animal. Els aloitadores, que són els encarregats de subjectar el cavall mentre se'l rapa, utilitzen només la seva destresa i el seu cos per fer-ho. Una altra característica específica de la rapa das bestas de Sabucedo és que la baixa o activitat d'ajuntar i conduir les bèsties fins a Sabucedo forma part de la pròpia celebració i hi participen centenars de persones. El dissabte pel matí, abans de pujar a la muntanya, se celebra una missa on es demana a Sant Llorenç (màrtir) (San Lourenzo), patró de Sabucedo, que no hi hagi cap accident o desgràcia durant la festa. - La Rapa das bestas de Sabucedo es el nombre del curro que cada año se celebra en Sabucedo (Pontevedra) España, en el territorio del municipio de La Estrada durante cuatro días, el primer viernes, sábado, domingo y lunes de julio. En la actualidad (2018) tiene más de 600 caballos, llamadas bestas a las hembras y garañones a los machos, divididos en 14 manadas, que viven libres en una extensión de más de 200 km² de monte. Esta celebración consiste, como en otros curros, en recoger los caballos del monte, meterlos en el curro, raparlos y marcarlos en la actualidad con microchips. El de Sabucedo es el curro más conocido y presenta además trazos propios que lo diferencian de los otros. Entre estas diferencias la más importante consiste en que en Sabucedo no se utilizan cuerdas, palos o aparatos para reducir al animal. Los aloitadores, que son los que se encargan de sujetar a la besta o garañón mientras se procede a la rapa, usan tan sólo su destreza y su cuerpo para realizar su labor. Otra especificidad de la Rapa das Bestas de Sabucedo es que la "Bajada" o actividad de juntanza y conducción de las bestas al lugar de Sabucedo forma parte de la propia celebración y participan en ella cientos de personas de Galicia y de fuera de la comunidad. Otra tradición dentro de la gran tradición que es la Rapa das Bestas de Sabucedo consiste en que el sábado por la mañana, muy temprano antes de subir al monte, se celebra una emotiva misa donde se pide a San Lorenzo (patrón de Sabucedo) para que no ocurra ningún accidente o desgracia durante la fiesta. La rapa es realizada por los aloitadores. El acto de la rapa es al mismo tiempo según el estudioso Manuel Cabada, una iniciación simbólica del paso del niño a la juventud, al agarrar por primera vez un potro guiado y dirigido por los mayores. Another interesting feature of the rapa is the Bajada– the process of rounding up the horses and leading them into Sabucedo – a part of the celebration joined by hundreds of local residents and visitors from further afield. Another element of the tradition is the celebration of a poignant mass, held very early on the Saturday morning, before going up the hill. During the mass, the congregation pray to San Lorenzo, the patron saint of Sabucedo, to keep those participating from any harm. According to the scholar Manuel Cabada, the rapa is a rite of passage from childhood to adolescence for those who seize a foal for the first time, guided and assisted by the older generation. The town of A Estrada is twinned with Almonte, located in the province of Huelva, due to a similar celebration that takes place called Saca de las Yeguas. (en)
