Va ser establerta segons l'estratigrafia del jaciment de Jericó per Kathleen Kenyon. El preceràmic A abasta una cronologia de més de 1000 anys, entre la fi de l' i el començament del IX mil·lenni aC. Tot i així, se'n debat el seu caràcter “neolític”, ja que no hi ha cap prova decisiva que demostri que el procés de domesticació arribés a la seva culminació durant aquest període. (ca)
- Das Präkeramische Neolithikum A ist der älteste Abschnitt des Präkeramischen Neolithikums (abgekürzt PPNA, nach engl. Pre-Pottery Neolithic A) im Vorderen Orient. Der von Kathleen Kenyon anhand der Stratigraphie von Jericho definierte Abschnitt bezeichnet eine epipaläolithische (auch protoneolithische) und frühjungsteinzeitliche Epoche zwischen 9.500 und 8.800 v. Chr. in der Levante und im nördlichen Teil des Fruchtbaren Halbmonds, in der die Herstellung von Tongefäßen noch nicht bekannt war. (de)
- El Neolítico Precerámico A (o PPNA, abreviatura del inglés 'Pre-Pottery Neolithic A') es una de las fases del Neolítico en Oriente Próximo, establecida a partir de la estratigrafía del yacimiento de Jericó. (Tell es-Sultan) por Kathleen Kenyon. Abarca más de un milenio entre el final del XI milenio a. C. y el principio del IX milenio a. C. No es una cultura homogénea, sino que se divide en varias entidades cronológicas y regionales del Levante meridional y septentrional: khiamiense, sultanianas, mureybetiana en particular. El horizonte del PPNA puede incluir también yacimientos contemporáneos en regiones vecinas (sudeste de Anatolia, Chipre, norte de Irak). (es)

Elle s'étend sur plus d'un millénaire entre la fin du XIe millénaire et le début du IXe millénaire av. J.-C. Elle ne constitue pas une culture homogène, mais est divisée en plusieurs entités chronologiques et régionales du sud et du nord du Levant : Khiamien, Sultanien, Mureybétien notamment. L'horizon PPNA peut également inclure des sites contemporains situés dans des régions voisines (sud-est de l'Anatolie, Chypre, nord de l'Irak). (fr)
- Pre-Pottery Neolithic A (PPNA) denotes the first stage of the Pre-Pottery Neolithic, in early Levantine and Anatolian Neolithic culture, dating to c. 12,000 – c. 10,800 years ago, that is, 10,000–8,800 BCE. Archaeological remains are located in the Levantine and Upper Mesopotamian region of the Fertile Crescent. The time period is characterized by tiny circular mud-brick dwellings, the cultivation of crops, the hunting of wild game, and unique burial customs in which bodies were buried below the floors of dwellings. - Het Prekeramisch Neolithicum A of PPN A (Engels: Pre-Pottery Neolithic A), ook wel het vroeg-Neolithicum genoemd, was de eerste periode van het Prekeramisch Neolithicum in de Levant. Ze volgde de Natufische cultuur van het Mesolithicum op. De fase werd gedefinieerd door Kathleen Kenyon op grond van de vondsten in Jericho in (Palestina). Het PPN A is grofweg gedateerd tussen 9500 en 8700 v.Chr. in de Vruchtbare Sikkel van de Levant en in het noordelijke deel van Mesopotamië. Waarschijnlijk is de cultuur in Zuidoost-Anatolië ontstaan. Развилась из местной натуфийской культуры в результате перехода к производящему хозяйству в конце последнего ледникового периода. Первоначально определена в регионе города Иерихон в Палестине. Предшествует другим культурам докерамического и керамического неолита Ближнего Востока. Собирали урожай пшеницы, ячменя и бобовых, но засевали поля сами или собирали дикорастущие местные растения — вопрос спорный.
