- A police box is a public telephone kiosk or callbox for the use of members of the police, or for members of the public to contact the police. It was used in the United Kingdom throughout the 20th century from the early 1920s. Unlike an ordinary callbox, its telephone was located behind a hinged door so it could be used from the outside, and the interior of the box was, in effect, a miniature police station for use by police officers to read and fill in reports, take meal breaks and even temporarily hold detainees until the arrival of transport. Diversamente da una normale postazione telefonica, il suo telefono era collocato dietro una porta incernierata così che potesse essere usato dall'esterno, e l'interno della cabina era, in effetti, una stazione di polizia in miniatura a uso degli agenti di polizia per leggere e compilare i rapporti, fare le pause pranzo e anche per tenere temporaneamente i prigionieri fino all'arrivo del trasporto. - En poliskiosk var en slags telefonkiosk som användes av poliser för att kommunicera med polisstationerna. I Sverige infördes poliskioskerna på 1930-talet. Den första togs i bruk i Katarina distrikt i Stockholm. De svenska kioskerna avvecklades i Sverige på 1950-talet då polisen införde bärbar kommunikationsutrustning. (sv)
