- Otium, a Latin abstract term, has a variety of meanings, including leisure time in which a person can enjoy eating, playing, relaxing, contemplation and academic endeavors. It sometimes, but not always, relates to a time in a person's retirement after previous service to the public or private sector, opposing "active public life". Otium can be a temporary time of leisure, that is sporadic. It can have intellectual, virtuous or immoral implications. It originally had the idea of withdrawing from one's daily business (neg-otium) or affairs to engage in activities that were considered to be artistically valuable or enlightening (i.e., speaking, writing, philosophy). It had particular meaning to businessmen, diplomats, philosophers and poets. (en)
- Het otium was het streefdoel van elke dichter tijdens de lyrische periode (1e eeuw v.Chr.) van de Romeinse letterkunde. Het nationaal gevoel was verdwenen door burgeroorlogen en de lyriek trad naar voren: lichte, individualistische (liefdes)poëzie die door iedereen geschreven werd/kon worden. De dichter streefde hierin naar het "otium": vrijheid van elke sociale of politieke verplichting; doen en laten wat je zelf wilde. Otium is tevens een Dispuut dat aangesloten is bij het T.S.C. St. Olof.

- El otium es un término abstracto latino que tiene diversos significados, incluyendo el tiempo de ocio en la que una persona puede, entre otras, disfrutar comiendo, jugando, contemplando o descansando. A veces, aunque no siempre, se refiere al tiempo en que una persona se ha "apartado" o jubilado después de haber prestado servicio anteriormente, tanto en el sector público como en el privado, oponiéndose así a la "vida pública activa". Romarna uppfattade arbete som ett nödvändigt ont, och begreppet otium stod för all sorts frihet från plikter och uppbundenhet; ett idealtillstånd som möjliggjorde bildning, konstnärskap och njutning – alltså sysselsättningar utan materiell vinning som mål.
