Older texts describe the pronephros as forming through the fusion of multiple nephrotomes. Modern visualization methods, such as scanning electron microscopy, in situ hybridization, and confocal microscopy, combined with the simple approach of peeling off the epidermis to see the forming kidney, have shown that this is not the case. Nephric mesenchyme separates from the intermediate mesoderm as a single elongated primordia. As this primordia begins to undergo epithelialization the anterior portions of the pronephros form rounded protrusions, which then later became the dorsal branches of the pronephros that link to nephrostomes (distinct from nephrotomes). These rounded bumps are the structures observed in histological sections that are referred to as nephrotomes. Nephrotomes are not relate to , which are thin ciliated funnels that link pronephric nephrons to the coelom. (en)

Les méthodes modernes de visualisation, telles que la microscopie électronique à balayage, l'hybridation in situ et la microscopie confocale, combinées à la simple approche consistant à décoller l'épiderme pour voir le rein en formation, ont montré que ce n'est pas le cas. Le mésenchyme néphrique se sépare du mésoderme intermédiaire sous la forme d'un seul primordia allongé. Lorsque ce primordia commence à subir une épithélialisation, les parties antérieures du pronéphros forment des protubérances arrondies, qui deviennent ensuite les branches dorsales du pronéphros qui se lient aux néphrostomes (distincts des néphrotomes). Ces bosses arrondies sont les structures observées dans les coupes histologiques qui sont appelées néphrotomes. Les néphrotomes ne sont pas liés aux néphrostomes, qui sont de fins entonnoirs ciliés qui relient les néphrons prénéphriques au coelome.
