Munigua is the site of the Roman city of Municipium Flavium Muniguense and is located 8 km from Villanueva del Río y Minas, in the province of Seville. Its origins are pre-Roman and it flourished between the 1st and 3rd centuries AD. Extensive remains can be seen and it has the designation of Historical Artistic Monument.

| - Munigua (auch Mulva; lateinisch municipium Flavium Muniguense) war ein römisches municipium in der römischen Provinz Baetica. Seit 1956 wird das Munizipium durch das Abteilung Madrid des Deutschen Archäologischen Instituts ausgegraben. Damit gehört es mit über 60 Jahren Grabungsgeschichte zu den gut erforschten Munizipien. Erster Grabungsleiter war Wilhelm Grünhagen. Im Osten der Stadt wurde 1967 das durch den Architekten und Bauforscher Theodor Hauschild entdeckt. Bis 1997 wurden insgesamt sieben Wohnhäuser identifiziert. Munigua ist das einzige bekannte Munizipium außerhalb Italiens, das ein aufwendig gestaltetes Terrassenheiligtum besaß, und diente wie alle Munizipien als Zentrum für die umgebenden Siedlungen. Wirtschaftliche Grundlagen waren eine ertragreiche Metallgewinnung und -verarbeitung sowie die Öl- und Weinproduktion. (de)

Se tienen noticias del yacimiento ya en el siglo XVI a raíz del descubrimiento de dos inscripciones. En el siglo XVIII se redactó un informe sobre el sitio para la Real Academia de las Buenas Letras de Sevilla y se identificaron las ruinas como un castillo, si bien esa interpretación es corregida por , quien intuye que «el edificio grande no es propiamente fortaleza o castillo, sino templo o Casa del Senado». En 1956 se retomaron las investigaciones de la mano del Instituto Arqueológico Alemán, cuyos trabajos continúan en la actualidad. Es Bien de Interés Cultural con la categoría de Monumento Histórico Artístico y la denominación de Castillo de Mulva por decreto de 3 de junio de 1931. (es)
