Een mastjaar komt voor bijvoorbeeld beuken, eiken en kastanjes ongeveer eens in de vier jaar voor. Met het verschijnsel kan door bosbeheerders rekening worden gehouden als ze verjonging van het bos willen realiseren. Het heeft ook gevolgen voor de wildstand.
