Sir Harold Malcolm Watts Sargent (29 April 1895 – 3 October 1967) was an English conductor, organist and composer widely regarded as Britain's leading conductor of choral works. The musical ensembles with which he was associated included the Ballets Russes, the Huddersfield Choral Society, the Royal Choral Society, the D'Oyly Carte Opera Company, and the London Philharmonic, Hallé, Liverpool Philharmonic, BBC Symphony and Royal Philharmonic orchestras. Sargent was held in high esteem by choirs and instrumental soloists, but because of his high standards and a statement that he made in a 1936 interview disputing musicians' rights to tenure, his relationship with orchestral players was often uneasy.   • Sir Malcolm Sargent, né le 29 avril 1895 à Ashford et mort le 3 octobre 1967 à Londres, est un chef d'orchestre anglais dont le nom est particulièrement rattaché aux Proms. Sargent est né à Ashford dans le Kent mais a passé la plus grande partie de sa jeunesse à Stamford dans le Lincolnshire. Enfant prodige, il accompagnait au piano les opéras de Gilbert et Sullivan montés par son père. Il devait par la suite devenir spécialiste de ces œuvres, dont les enregistrements subsistent au catalogue. Il a ensuite appris à jouer de l'orgue avant d'aller à l'université de Durham, où il a passé son doctorat en musique à l'âge de vingt-et-un ans.
