Le satellite est placé en orbite dans le cadre du premier vol du lanceur Vega début février 2012. LARES è stato messo in orbita il 13 febbraio 2012 dalla base di lancio europea di Kourou, in Guyana francese con il lancio di qualifica del nuovo vettore europeo Vega. La missione spaziale è destinata allo studio di alcuni aspetti della relatività generale. Uma versão melhorada chamada LARES 2 está previsto para ser lançado no final de 2019, no primeiro voo do foguete Vega-C. O satélite LARES é o objeto conhecido mais denso orbitando no Sistema Solar.
