Dla rocka amerykańskiego Kansas jest tym czym dla brytyjskiego były grupy Genesis, Emerson, Lake and Palmer lub Yes. Kansas była jedną z niewielu grup amerykańskich, które włączyły się w nurt progresywnego rocka. Charakterystycznym dla grupy było bogate brzmienie oparte na obecności w składzie skrzypiec, dwóch gitar prowadzących, symfonicznego brzmienia instrumentów klawiszowych, łagodnie brzmiącego i silnego śpiewu oraz na rozbudowanej ornamentyce.
