Juan Chavez (1966 – September 9, 1999) was a Mexican serial killer who, between 1986 and 1990, killed at least six gay men in three cities in Los Angeles County, California. Chavez claimed to authorities that the murders were an attempt to terminate AIDS, which, in the 1980s, received worldwide panic. On June 21, 1999, he was sentenced to five consecutive life sentences without the possibility of parole, but committed suicide by hanging in his cell at Folsom State Prison shortly after.
